August Market Leverage Reaches New High -3

market leverage through August 2025Market leverage reached 5.84x in August, which is the highest on record.  We're on dangerous, untrod ground here, but loose regulation could allow that to persist for quite some time.  To wit, an elimination of quarterly reporting could very easily extend that possibility.  The SEC adopted quarterly reporting in 1970 and considered a similar Trump proposal during his first term.  It  concluded that adopting a more European schedule could help smaller companies, and I concede that possibility.  However, as someone who has experience moribund European stock markets firsthand, I'll also offer the opinion that more frequent information is better.

American natural gas vs electricity pricing through August 2025August prices for American natural gas and electricity reversed direction back towards one another, but not significantly.  I expect the latter to continue rising as EV sales hit another record, and look poised to exceed 10% this month before the federal tax credit expires.  Of course, that's handily exceeded by electricity usage from data centers, which is expected to double or triple over the remainder of the decade.
